Why I Came Back

I quit because it was a hobby and hobbies get dropped.

That is the whole story of 2020 to 2021 for me. I started streaming for the same reason a lot of people did, which is that there was nowhere to go and nothing to do. I had a PC, I had games, and I had an unreasonable number of free evenings. So I turned a camera on and talked to almost nobody for a while, and I liked it more than I expected to.

Then the world opened back up and the reason evaporated. No structure, no point, no plan. Just a guy who used to stream. Hobbies get dropped.

What actually changed

I am 40 now. That sounds like a setup for a joke but it is the real answer.

At 35 I had opinions and mostly kept them to myself, because what is the upside. At 40 I have opinions and I have watched enough go sideways that keeping quiet stopped feeling like politeness and started feeling like a habit I picked up without deciding to.

I look around this country and I do not recognize a lot of it. Housing math that does not work for anybody under 35. A cost of living that outran wages years ago. A government that answers a direct question with a press release. You are allowed to say that out loud without hating anybody, and I am tired of pretending the two are the same thing. That is going to show up here. Not every post, not as a personality, but it is going to show up.

The part I got wrong the first time

Structure. There was none.

I streamed when I felt like it, about whatever, to whoever happened to be there. That is fine when it is a way to kill a Tuesday. It falls apart the second you want it to be anything else, because there is nothing to come back to. No thread. No reason for a person who liked one thing you did to find the next thing you did.

So this time it is built around something. Gaming, because that is where I actually spend my time and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Tech, because I am the guy who takes the thing apart to see how it works and then breaks it. Canada, because I live here and I have things to say about it. Streaming, because I have spent years in the weeds of OBS and the software that runs a broadcast, and most of what is written about it is either surface level or wrong.

And whatever else I feel like ranting about. I am not going to pretend that category does not exist.

Why there is a website

Because everything else is rented.

Every platform I would post on is a place where the rules change without warning, the reach gets throttled for reasons nobody will explain, and one bad morning can take the whole thing away. That is not a conspiracy, it is just the deal. You are a tenant. Act accordingly.

So I built my own place. It runs on hardware I pay for, with software I wrote myself, badly at first and less badly now. That was most of my spare time this year and I would not call any of it wasted. If every platform I am on disappeared tomorrow, this site would still be here and you would still be able to find me.

It is small right now. This is the first post. It will grow, and some of what I build will break in public, which is fine.

What you get

Honest opinions from a guy in the Rockies who is not being paid to have them. No sponsor is going to tell me a bad game is good. Nobody is going to talk me out of a take because it costs reach.

I will be wrong sometimes. When I am, tell me. I would rather argue with you than perform for you.
